Advantages of RFID in Personal Digital Security

By: Lory Sargu

Radio Frequency Identification, known as RFID, is a type of security that has additional features so your individuality is used to verify who you say you are. This way, the chances of someone getting into the information they shouldn’t is very low. The process involves using a tag and an autoresponder to process the information that is being read and then comparing it to what has been stored in the database.

There are many advantages to the RFID security system that merits the expense of it. With this type of personal digital security system in place you don’t have to worry about someone getting into your computer. Many high profile businesses use it to secure passwords and access to various parts of the building.

There will be a record of the individuals that have accessed these areas or this information with the RFID system. This way if there are any concerns or security has been breached they know which individuals to question about the issues.

These types of RFID for personal digital security can be used for a variety of different elements in our society as well. It is common in many locations for there to be toll roads. Those with an RFID system in place don’t have to stop as they pre-pay a set amount of money on their account. As they pass through the toll the RFID is read and it automatically stores that information into the database and deducts from the account the appropriate amount due.

The trucking industry is one that is very reliable for moving goods from one end of the country to the next. With the new limits on hours of service though every bit of time that the drivers can have is going to mean more money in their pockets. A type of RFID program called Pre-Pass is allowing them to bypass mandatory stops.

In order to be eligible for the Pre-Pass program the truck must pass an inspection. The driver must have an excellent driving record as well. A signal is transmitted as the truck goes past the port of entry locations. The information about the truck is recorded in their database but the truck continues on its way.

RFID is being implemented into the passports of various countries as well to help prevent passports from being stolen and used by other people. The passport is scanned and it will identify the information to ensure it is actually a valid passport and not a fake.

Some ranchers have started implementing RFID technology via microchips into their prized livestock. This allows them to track their movements and prevents economic loss should these animals end up lost or stolen. Some countries are developing programs to implement this same type of program for humans as well. It would certainly help when a child was lost or stolen.

Even though RFID technology is quite expensive to implement, it is worthwhile due to the amount of security it offers. It is virtually impossible for hackers or impersonators to get passed this type of security system.
