Buying prescription medication used to be tedious and taxing. That was until Internet pharmacies were created. Ordering medications online has never been this easy, you only need three things to make an order: One, a good computer; two, a steady Internet connection; and three, a credit or debit card. Searching for online drugstores is relatively easy, too. Just type in the drug you’re looking for on the search box of your favorite search engine website and press search. Soon enough, you’ll be looking at hundreds, if not thousands, of links that would point you to different Internet pharmacies, legal and otherwise. But online drugstores are like a double-edged sword. Its ease of use has also been a cause of controversy, especially after a reported incident of a nineteen year old boy who died after overdosing on a prescription medication that he got from an Internet-based drugstore that did not require him to present a valid prescription. A lot of different prescription medications are available on web-based drugstores – antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, birth control pills, muscle relaxants – all of which are controlled substances that could be habit forming when taken at the wrong doses and when not necessary. And now that web-based drugstores sell these prescription drugs without a prescription, just about anybody who has money to pay for the drugs can buy it. It may start out as a simple experiment for teenagers, but if they continually use prescription medication even if they don’t need it, they might end up getting hooked to it. This scenario can be avoided, but how? Here are some helpful tips to prevent this tragedy from happening: · Talk to your children. Explain to them what the different controlled substances are, what they are for, and why they are used only when needed and only as instructed by a licensed doctor. You have to emphasize that taking prescription drugs when it isn’t needed may cause addiction and other serious medical complications. · Set an example. As a parent, be a living proof that being keeping yourself healthy breeds a more active and happier life. Show them how to keep their body fit and strong. And afterwards, show them an example of a person intensely addicted to controlled substances and let them decide for themselves whether or not they want to be like that when they grow up. · Monitor your children’s Internet access. Let your children know that there are websites on the Internet whose only goal is to rip off people’s money by setting up fake e-businesses. Teach them to avoid websites like scam online drugstore sites that offer to sell them medications they do not need. Internet pharmacies are a blessing to everybody, especially now that we live in a fast-paced world where it seems difficult to find time to stop and buy medications. But because of potential risks web-based drugstores pose on both children and adults, you might want to give it more thought before hitting on the buy button on any Internet-based pharmacy.
